If you knew an earthquake was coming, what would you do differently?
Canterbury Seismic has developed New Zealand's first ground-sensor based nationwide earthquake early warning system, giving up to a minute of warning to people and automated systems before shaking arrives.

How does it work?
Detect
Our nationwide network continuously monitors seismic activity. As soon as an earthquake begins, the system identifies the initial waves and confirms that a significant event is underway.
Decide
Within the first few seconds of the earthquake, real-time algorithms estimate the earthquake’s size, location, and forecast the expected shaking across all of New Zealand.
Warn
If shaking is expected at your site, alerts are issued immediately both directly to users and to automated systems.
Act
Damage mitigation procedures are triggered automatically to protect people and infrastructure during the incoming earthquake.
What could you do with the warning?
Earthquake early warning isn’t just about receiving an alert, it’s about enabling the right response, for the right people, at the right time.
Canterbury Seismic’s EEW service is designed to support multiple roles across your organisation, with practical, real-world actions.

- Trigger 'Drop, Cover and Hold' messaging through your PA system
- Provide clear and consistent instructions to everyone
Safeguard your operations
Automatically transition your buildings and equipment into safer states
- Open emergency doors
- Halt machinery
- Open elevators at the next floor
Integrate with your systems
Ingest EEW into your existing infrastructure
- Trigger actions through BMS, SCADA or PLC systems
- Fan-out EEW to your own APIs to integrate with internal systems
Scale across your portfolio
Manage alerts and responses across one site or many
- Configure site-specific alerting thresholds and actions
- Ensure consistent response standards across your organisation

Powered by more than 500 sensors
Our nationwide fleet of more than 500 sensors provides the ideal sensing infrastructure for rapid earthquake detection and characterisation.
Backed by over 20 years of engineering
Canterbury Seismic has been supplying seismic instrumentation and services to New Zealand and the world for more than two decades.
Our solutions have been tried and tested through several major earthquake sequences.
