When a significant earthquake hits, the people running the response have to make big calls straight away. Which communities took the worst of it. Where to send limited crews first. Which lifelines and key buildings to check. The information that would answer those questions, how hard the ground actually shook, street by street, is usually not there. Visual inspection takes hours to days, but a response has to start in minutes. A dense regional network closes that gap, turning the chaotic early hours into a high-resolution map of where the strongest shaking landed, so triage starts on evidence rather than assumption.

Shaking varies from one site to the next, and no two earthquakes are the same. Each event has its own intensity, frequency and duration, so what happened last time, or a few streets away, does not tell you what your building just experienced. A national magnitude confirms an earthquake happened. The only reliable answer for your structure comes from measuring that specific event, on the building itself.
