A 6.3, near Te Anau, at 9.14pm

At 9.14pm on Thursday 16 July 2026, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck 40 km north of Te Anau. It was felt across the South Island, generated more than 20,000 GeoNet felt reports, and briefly prompted a tsunami warning for the West Coast, from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point. For Queenstown Airport, a designated lifeline utility operating in one of New Zealand's most complex airspaces, it raised one urgent question: was the terminal safe to stay open?

The building answered for itself, within minutes

Sentinel™ is instrumented in the terminal building. Within minutes of the shaking, it had the answer. At 94 km from the epicentre, the terminal experienced moderate shaking, MMI 5, with a peak ground acceleration of 55 mg, comfortably within the building's safe structural limits. Distance and magnitude alone could not have told anyone that. A specific building 94 km away might be fine, or it might not; only a measurement at the building itself closes that gap.

Open, on evidence

With that data in hand, QAC kept the terminal open. There was no need to evacuate passengers and staff into an already disrupted night. The runway was a separate, standard aviation precaution: aircraft were held off and sent around while it was visually inspected, and an aircraft on finals shortly after the event landed once the inspection was complete, about 25 minutes later. Through all of it, the team managed the terminal precinct and security, with the building's status settled by data rather than guesswork.

Earthquakes rarely reveal their true severity in the first few minutes, and distance and magnitude alone do not tell you what a specific building actually experienced. Instrumented monitoring closes that gap. It is what a strong safety culture is built for: not reacting under pressure, but having the systems in place, including real-time building data, to make a fast, evidence-based call when it matters most.
